Lake Titicaca

lake-titicacaLake Titicaca has a sacred place within Inca mythology. The god Viracocha created the world from here, coming out of the lake to create the sun, stars and the first people. The first king of the Incas, Manco Capac, was born here.

The lake is located high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Its western part lies within the Puno Region of Peru, whilst the eastern side is located in Bolivia. The origins of the name "Titicaca" are uncertain. It has been translated as "Rock Puma", because it resembles the shape of a puma hunting a rabbit.

Uros Islands

The Uros islands are floating islands constructed of reeds that grow on the shores of Lake Titicaca. They are able to float around the lake, thus allowing the residents a defense against enemies. To this day many of the islands have watch-towers, largely constructed of reeds.
